FDNY Union Officials Unload On Commissioner

THE PRESIDENTS OF THE TWO LEADING UNIONS representing New York firefighters, the Uniformed Firefighters and Fire Officers Associations, let loose a volley of accusations against the Fire Commissioner yesterday.

They are claiming that the Administration is trying to cover up the results of the ongoing investigation into the Deutsche Bank building fire that killed 2 FF’s in August.  The claim is that the Commissioner’s office is confiscating embarassing documents and prohibiting the use of emails between upper echelon officers.

Channel 7 reports:

Meanwhile, Eyewitness News has obtained a memo from December 2004, in which a division commander was urged by the captain of the fire house next to the bank building to develop a standard operating procedure for dealing with a fire or hazardous material situation at the contaminated and condemned building.

No such plan apparently was created.

There is now a plan, which was reportedly written days after the fire.

Yesterday, at a news conference, the two Union presidents said the two chiefs who called for an end to e-mail messages were Salvatore Cassano, the chief of department, and Michael Weinlein, the Manhattan borough commander. The union leaders said the chiefs’ orders about e-mail seemed to be part of a concerted effort to undermine any attempt to get to the bottom of the circumstances surrounding the fire.
