Downtown Fire In Durango Injures 7 FF’s

DURANGO, COLORADO, SUFFERED A FIRE AND EXPLOSION FRIDAY afternoon that injured seven firefighters and destroyed three businesses on Main Avenue.

The fire began in the Season’s Restaurant and spread to a bakery and clothing store, all of which were gutted.  Two other businesses were badly damaged.

The explosion occurred about an hour after the fire began and was caught on the video that we have posted with this story.  Dave Imming, a spokesman for Durango Fire & Rescue Authority, said that three firefighters were blown off the roof by the explosion which has not yet been explained.  The firefighters said that there were no backdraft indications, making other possible causes viable.

Six of the firefighters were listed as in “good” condition and the seventh is “fair.”  Four of them have since been released from the hospital and three of them were admitted.

Fire departments from three other communities - Upper Pine, Los Pinos and Fort Lewis Mesa fire departments assisted the Durango F&R.

The Durango Herald has the complete STORY.
A sidebar story on the injured FF’s is HERE.

This 10-minute raw video catches the explosion a few minutes into it and later it shows the subsequent removal of the injured FF’s.  (For you railroad buffs, at the 9-minute point the Durango & Silverton steam locomotive goes by the camera).

Lots of pictures and the first hand account of the firefighter who was buried under bricks during the explosion atAccess Durango. It’s really a miracle that no one was killed.
