Don’t Forget: Turn It Off

FROM SHELBY COUNTY, ALABAMA, THE BIRMINGHAM NEWS is reporting that a routine food-on-the-stove call has caused some embarrassment at Fire Station 3.

The North Shelby Fire District engine company was dispatched on a fire call Sunday and when they returned to quarters around 6 pm they found a fire in their own kitchen.

It began in a cooking pot that had been left on the flame when they left on the call.  Fortunately, damage was limited to the stove and some nearby cabinets.

I have heard of hooking up the station alert system to shut off the stove burners at the same time they turn on the lights. Having done some bone head moves myself, I can see the value :)

Kind of interesting to see technology change. One fire company I know that discontinued it’s station siren converted the system instead to turn on the station lights and unlock the door when they have a call.

My own station now has motion-activated lights in all the bays so as soon as someone enters they come on — something quite handy for night time calls. Especially since some of our normal earlier-arriving members have garage remote controls to open the big doors instead of using a key in the side doors.

Stations out in California have had the gas shutoff to the kitchen when the Bells ring for over thirty years and still do. And was it was integrated right into the CAD system in most LG stations as the modern systems came on board..reset(restore gas) button right in the kitchen
