High-Power Telescope Starts House Fire

It Wasn't Only the Stars That Lined Up Just Right

A HOUSE FIRE IN CAREFREE, ARIZONA, MONDAY NIGHT started for no apparent reason at first.  But when the fire investigator was able to get a good look at the point of origin Tuesday he found that an improbable set of circumstances most likely led to the ignition.


Right in the middle of the area of origin on the outdoor patio was a positioned telescope, one that costs several thousands of dollars, that was lined up for night star gazing, but ended up beaming the sun's rays through the high-power magnifying lenses.  They have determined that the hot, intense beam ignited the wood surface directly behind the telescope.


KNXV-TV in Phoenix vistited the site and prepared this video report:
