Now the Word is Spreading Like Wildfire
CHARLIE DOWD, 69, IS A RETIRED firefighter from the San Francisco, California, Fire Department. On Wednesday he boarded the California Zephyr, an Amtrak train going to Chicago and had a sleeping compartment. His plans called for him to change trains in Chicago and continue on to Montreal where he planned to visit his grandchildren.
On Thursday he phoned his son and said that he was just outside of Denver and that is the last any of his family has heard from him. An Amtrak conductor believes that he may have spoken with Charlie when they were near Omaha, when the train arrived in Chicago Charlie was not on it. However, his luggage, cell phone and medications were still in his compartment.
The conductor mentioned above said that Dowd appeared confused and thought he was in an apartment, not on a train. He also mentioned something about needing to "find the front door."
His family have sprung into action immediately notifying all the police departments along the route of travel, especially those in cities where the train made stops. One of his daughters flew to Omaha and started a campaign to greet Zephyr passengers at the train station with flyers asking if they have seen him. Other family members are visiting the other stations between Denver and Omaha and making similar inquiries. Their efforts have also gotten many local television stations along the route to cover the story and enlist any possible sighting from their viewers.
They also set up a Facebook page: MissingPersonCharlieDowd If you are a Facebook member, click on the link to the page where you will find a lot of information on not just Charlie, but the entire search effort. The family is well organized and they are posting frequent notices of their acitivities and discoveries. From here on out, that is probably the best place to check for any latest news or updates on the search. Charlie is described as being 5-ft. 10-in. tall, 175 lbs. with gray hair and blue eyes.
