Another Stolen Ambulance

Quick Apprehension Thanks to Witnesses

A RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA, FIRE DEPARTMENT AMBULANCE was the target of a joyrider/thief Saturday night, but it turned out to be a very brief ride and not so joyous after all.

The medic unit and an engine company were on the scene of a medical emergency and inside a house tending to a patient when they heard the backup alarm sounding on the ambulance.  Looking out the window they saw the ambulance being driven off and they called for the police and a backup ambulance.

The ambulance was soon located parked in an alleyway about two blocks away and witnesses at that location were able to identify two people who were running away from the unit.  Mike Johnston, 26, of Rapid City was quickly arrested and charged with driving under the influence and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.  He is currently free on $300 bail.

Let me get this straight…the guy swipes a $100k ambulance full of equipment, drives away while under the infulence, delays medical aid to the patient and his bail is set at $300. The judge is kidding, right?
