Perps Trigger Ka-Boom as Cops Are Raiding Their Meth Lab

No Injuries, But They're In Jail Now

KATIKATI, NEW ZEALAND, POLICE have three people in custody following a bizarre raid Saturday on a meth lab set up in an abandoned lawnmower factory.  The officers had a search warrant and were surrounding the building to pen in the criminals when the perps either accidentally or deliberately started setting off a series of heavy explosions.  The fireworks began just as the ring of police officers were approaching the building, causing them to back off quickly.

The ka-booms started a major fire in the facility that is believed to be run by the local criminal group known as the Mongrel Mob.  The fire was described as "intense" and took about four hours to bring under control.  The fire department had already been deployed and was on standby when the raid began.

The police nabbed three adults on the scene and took them away.  A 35-year-old man from Katikati, a 37-year-old man from Maketu and a 26-year-old woman from Tauranga are all jointly charged with arson and conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine.

Three suspects are reluctantly led away from the
crime scene.  (NewsTalkZB)
