The fire was contained by 6:30 am but not before part of the roof collapsed and the upper floors had significant fire damage.

The New York Daily News is reporting:

Fire marshals are investigating the fire as suspicious, citing the volume of flame and that the building is typically unoccupied after 9 p.m.

The 1886 building houses classrooms and studios for the fine arts programs at the college's Clinton Hill campus and is part of the Pratt Institute Historic District, according to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Stunned students looked on in horror early Friday as flames flared through the roof of the massive brick structure, consuming a part of their school and some of their hard work too.

Nicole Rifkin, 21, who has classes in the building, said her roommate lost several pieces of art in the fire. "My roommate lost four of her paintings, which she's been working on for about six months," said Rifkin, a junior at the college. "It's really detrimental to our coursework because we have so much time invested."Fire officials said the blaze was difficult to control because of the building’s age, the layout of the sixth-floor studio and the volume of fire.

"We had heavy fire venting out the front windows, the side windows and also in the rear of the building," said FDNY Chief of Operations James Esposito. "It's a very old building with very high ceilings on the top floor, 15-foot-high ceilings. So the fire had a large amount of area to consume and it was a very difficult fire to extinguish."

The Pratt Institute is a private college focusing on art, design and architecture and opened in Brooklyn in 1887.

Sprinkler retrofit is always the answer to preserving old buildings. Probably millions spent in renovation over the years. Sprinklers cost about the same as energy-efficient lighting retrofits.
