Heavy Winds Spread Fire in Oakland

A FIRE IN A COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE in Oakland, California, Saturday afternoon spread to two other buildings before the firefighters contained it.  Heavy winds were blowing embers around the neighborhood and one nearby house caught fire as well as an outbuilding.

Three alarms were called before the OFD was able to successfully knock down the blaze that started in the former Candell's College and Preparatory Academy building.  The advanced fire caused a dangerous situation inside and the OIC ordered a withdrawal not long before the roof collapsed in the building which was currently being used as a thrift shop.

The house fire was knocked down easily, but not before it received some fire damage.  The nearby outbuilding was destroyed as was the Candell's building.

The fire is believed to have started in the area where a rummage sale had been held earlier Saturday.  It was reported around 4:40 pm Pacific and was out in about two hours.
