Moving Out So That Others Can Move Up…"
The former fire chief of the Lincoln Township VFD in LaPorte County, Indiana, was arrested last week on child sexual molestation charges.
David Kaufman, 57, was charged with three counts of attempted sexual misconduct with a minor, Class C felonies; one count of attempted possession of child pornography, a Class D felony; and false informing, a Class A misdemeanor.
The LaPorte Herald Argus is reporting:
The investigation by the La Porte County Sheriff's Department into alleged sex acts involving a young boy and a former fire chief includes reports dating back to 1986.
All of the individuals who alleged to have been victimized are male and include both minors and adults. There have been 15 reports of Kaufman allegedly asking men to engage in sexual acts.
La Porte County Sheriff's Department Det. Jennifer Rhine-Walker, who has been working on the case since December 2012, said the sheriff's department has received additional calls from alleged victims since Kaufman's arrest was announced. Rhine-Walker said the investigation began when an alleged victim reported Kaufman falsely accused him and another man of stealing Kaufman's boat.
One of those men was arrested in December and the other man in February. The alleged victim provided documents and evidence on Dec. 26, 2012, which proved Kaufman did not own the boat when he reported it stolen. According to the victim, the reason Kaufman reported the two men for stealing the boat was because the victim rejected sexual advances from Kaufman. The alleged victim, who was also involved with the volunteer fire department, reported Kaufman had been making the advances since he was 14-years-old. He said the advances ceased shortly before Kaufman accused the men of stealing his boat.
Rhine-Walker said she then began investigating the accusations into Kaufman's advances toward men, and found several men reported similar incidents involving Kaufman.
