Elementary School Students Involved
AN 11-YR.-OLD BOY WAS KILLED and four other children were injured Thursday morning when their school bus collided with a dump truck on a country road near Kuna, Idaho.
The accident took place at an intersection that was controlled by a stop sign. The school bus was in the road that had the stop, and a dump truck was in the cross street and going through the intersection at the same time.
The Idaho Statesman is reporting:
Daniel Robert Cook died of blunt force trauma Thursday morning after the bus collided with a dump truck on a two-lane country road about 20 miles west of Boise, Canyon County Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris said.
Four other children on the bus were taken to a hospital. Two of them were released after treatment, and the other two were transported to another facility for specialized care. Details on their injuries were not released.
The bus driver also was taken to a hospital for monitoring; Idaho State Police said she was distraught after the accident but not physically injured.
The bus was carrying 12 children to Crimson Point Elementary School when the wreck occurred at about 8 a.m. in an area of small farms between Nampa and Kuna, on the edge of the Snake River Canyon. The truck driver was uninjured.
All of the children on the bus were sixth-graders or younger.
The State Police say that it may take several days to determine for certain what caused the collision. They were conducting acceleration tests with a similar bus yesterday afternoon to see if the bus could have possibly stopped and then began at the corner.
A police officer said that since a fatality was involved, any charges against either of the drivers would be criminal charges.
