Poor Career Decision
A FAUQUIER COUNTY (Virginia) GRAND JURY INDICTED the former secretary/treasurer of the Goldvein Volunteer Fire Department Wednesday, charging Kimberly Ann Strayer, 42, with 13 felony counts of embezzlement.
The next day, Strayer who was also an employee of the County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management, voluntarily surrendered to the Sheriff and was incarcerated being held without bail until a hearing.
The thefts took place from May 2012 through Oct. 21 of last year, according to court documents.
The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation Nov. 13, after fire company leaders contacted investigators to say, “We’ve got a problem,” Lt. James Hartman said.
Fire department officers “turned over several financial records showing questionable withdrawals,” sheriff’s Detective Michael R. Zeets wrote in an affidavit for search warrants. Mrs. Strayer deposited Goldvein volunteer funds into her personal checking accounts, Sgt. Zeets added.
The investigators have documented at least $54,816 stolen from the Goldvein VFD.
In her county job she worked as a “revenue recovery coordinator” handling the billing for all the county’s rescue squads’ ambulance calls. She has not been accused of stealing any funds through her office, but she has been terminated by the county.
