Indictments Unsealed Wednesday

SHREVEPORT (Louisiana) FIRE CHIEF CRAIG MULFORD voluntarily surrendered to the sheriff department Thursday after being indicted on five counts of malfeasance in office by the Caddo Parish grand jury.  The secret indictment was unsealed on Wednesday and each count carries a bond of $5,000.

This is part of a continuing investigation into a disgusting scandal at Fire Station 8 where many of the firefighters who were assigned there, including two captains, spent several months taking advantage of two mentally-retarded adults.  Firegeezer first reported on this incident in August 2013 when the story broke into the public.  Read the earlier Firegeezer postings HERE and HERE.

At the time, KSLA-TV reported:

The charges stem from allegations that the accused firefighters subjected two disabled adults who were regulars at Fire Station 8 to cruel pranks that included stranding them on the roof of the fire station and forcing them to drink human urine.

The firefighters are also accused of chipping in to pay for a prostitute for one of the men, described as a severely mentally challenged 58-year-old man with “the mind of an 8 or 9-year-old child.” According to the documents, the man was ordered to have sex with the prostitute in the restroom at Fire Station 8 while Captain Derrick Harris and four others looked on.

Chief Mulford was soon swept into the investigation when he took some questionable actions that were apparently intended to interfere, if not squelch completely, the investigation into the firefighters’ behavior and actions.  Read more on this activity in a contemporary article posted by KSLA HERE.

KTAL-TV filed this video report:

So far, five other firefighters have been arrested and charged in the scandal, but it was reported Thursday that there is at least one more sealed indictment against another member that has not yet been served.  Chief Mulford has been placed on administrative leave with pay.  He faces a potential 25-year prison sentence.  He has been Shreveport’s fire chief for three years.
